What Is The True Purpose Of College?
What Is The True Purpose Of College? Campus architecture became a focal point of the college experience. Technological advancements combined with growing amounts of wealth in American society led to the construction of incredible campuses during the early 1900s. In fact, the building construction done during this period was so good that it remains a strong pull for many historical universities to this day. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. At the center of the college sales pitch was the idea that a 4-year college degree was necessary to have success in the professional workforce. Bureau of the Census, Historical Statistics of the United StatesBy 1950, the traditional 4-year college program had officially become mainstream. By riding the wave of government support, the college system had grown from something that was a nice-to-have into something that was now a need-to-have. The GI Bill was even nicknamed the âmagic carpet to the Middle Class,â which permanently linked higher education and the American dream. Debatably the most important event in the history of college education happened in 1944 with the introduction of the GI bill. Instead of building a system that is one size fits all, it appears to be trending in the direction of one size fits none. Or to put it another way, the purpose of college has never seemed as watered down as it does now. The GI bill was created to help veterans of World War II. Among other aspects, it granted stipends to cover tuition and expenses for close to 9 million veterans. As a result, colleges saw a massive spike in enrollment in the decades following. One of the reasons was that colleges began putting an emphasis on the aesthetic of their campuses. If you are on a date, you would naturally want to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique, not boring. You also want to have an opinion, not step back like an unthinking geek. Write your essay as though you would be a great second date. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. As a result of the decreases in funding, colleges were forced to raise tuition prices to make up the difference. This caused a shift in the college model from acting as a public service to more of a traditional business model which involved aggressively selling a service to customers. A depiction of Harvardâs Campus in 1720When the first colleges were founded, they primarily existed to serve the needs of the church to train clergymen. In fact, about half of Harvardâs first 500 graduates went into ministry, with the remaining half largely obtaining liberal arts degrees. As much as you wish to shine, the shine will be lost if your sentences and thoughts do not string together logically. Perhaps you can create a little mystery by not answering the prompt immediately. Maybe you could reveal that in the last sentence of your prompt after telling about all the little things that have some relevance to your area of study. The sources for school statistics and data is the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. The list could go on, but as you can see from the above points, it seems that the college system seems to be having a bit of an existential crisis. One would think that the college system had learned from its history and created the ultimate Swiss army knife that serves multiple purposes; however, many recent trends suggest otherwise. Despite the Morrill Land-Grant Act leading to an increase in the amount of vocational education present at universities, a college degree wasnât considered necessary for most people. However, college attendance continued to grow for other reasons. This all started to change in 1825 when the University of Virginia was founded. Itâs founding was championed by Thomas Jefferson, who would push for colleges to move away from their religious ties and also become both affordable and useful enough for the general public. In summary, colleges started by only serving a small fraction of the population. For example, you might describe many natural flora, observe fauna, then list feelings you have about nature to lead up to writing that you want to study biology. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out.

How To Write A College Application Essay
How To Write A College Application Essay If you read different essays online, you will find how experts use illustrations minimally. It urges the reader to read more and understand what you are trying to say. I think five paragraphs is a good number to shoot for when writing, but it isnât a hard-fast rule you need to hit every time. Each essay is different and require more or less paragraphs depending on the information you need to provide in the writing. The answer is one page single spaced or two pages double spaced. Now, depending on how you've setup your document your page count may vary slightly, but with Arial or Times New Roman 12 point font and conventional margins you should see similar results. 500 word essays are very common throughout middle and high school English curriculums, especially as book reports, or summaries of current events. Carolineâs admissions consulting service has helped students get into Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, and Columbia. If you look at the titles of the sample admissions essays on our website, youâll quickly find that they are simple, short, and not at all fancy. More importantly, they donât detract from the essay. Your title is a brief compliment to whatâs to come, not an opportunity to use a grabber or shock the admissions officer. Focus on whatâs important, not on things like this. Since there can be a large variation on the number of words needed to fill a page, most papers are no longer assigned by page count. That is, an assignment, essay or paper will likely be assigned as 1500 â" 2000 words rather than 3 â" 4 pages. Research on education shows that the strongest predictor of a studentâs success is how detailed and specific their picture is of the future. This is the most important work we do, as individuals and communities. Explain your commitments, and you will be the kind of student colleges find immensely attractive. I was taught essays should be 7 paragraphs long, not 5. This way it is much more difficult for the writer to âgame the systemâ by using large fonts and excessive spacing to meet the writing criteria. In most academic essays, you will be required to produce a thesis statement. The thesis is a clear outline of what your essay is about. It lets the reader know the main topic, point of the essay and the ideas you'd like to discuss. This is how to write essay easily and get full attention from your examiner. The best way to write your essay is by including as many relevant examples as possible. There are many ways to do that, but some are wrong. This paper will focus on good ways to start an essay and how to include examples when writing your essay assignment. Want the strategies we have used to get students into top Ivy League schools in your email box every month? You can easily check page count in word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, but for a quick reference use our table below. My teacher told me that I needed to write an essay that had 2500 words. I got marks off for not writing an essay with exactly 2500 words. Thatâs completely ridiculous but my teacher refuse to reinstate the point she took off because she said 2500 words and not 2498 words. I couldâve just said that my was 2500 words and she wouldâve never known the difference. I donât understand why Iâm being punished for being honest. Is this really something thatâs worth complaining about? The important issue is to write the best essay you can, not the length of words. If youâre focus in only on the words and not what youâve written, your writing is never going to be good. My teacher said 3 central paragraphs never gives enough detail to the topic, so we should write 5. It makes sense to me and that is how Iâve always done it. If you have several illustrations supporting one idea, you need to select the one that seems to be most effective. Only a single illustration should be used while supporting a particular idea.

120 College Essay Examples For 14 Schools + Expert Analysis
120 College Essay Examples For 14 Schools + Expert Analysis At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. What Iâve realized though, is that I donât have to sacrifice all for one. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge Iâve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond âpotatoes! If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I donât have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. When seniors began to ask me for advice and teachers recruited me to teach underclassmen, I discovered not only that I had been heard, but that others wanted to listen. At heart, I am still reserved , but in finding my voice, I found a strength I could only dream of when I stood in silence so many years ago. Scanning the school club packet, I searched for my place. But then, I sat in on a debate team practice and was instantly hooked. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. In discussions, I put forward my ideas with every bit as much conviction as my classmates.

How To Write A Great Admission Essay
How To Write A Great Admission Essay She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. Gingerly, my grandma stood up from the couch in the living room, and as if lured by the smell, sat by the silver bowl and dug her hands into the spiced cabbages. As her bony hands shredded the green lips, a look of determination grew on her face. Though her withered hands no longer displayed the swiftness and precision they once did, her face showed the aged rigor of a professional. TYPICAL ESSAYS REQUIRED MAJOR ESSAY , YOUR ACADEMIC INTEREST, YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY, and WHY THIS UNIVERSITY THE BEST FOR YOU The most important element in each essay you write is YOU! It is YOU that the admissionâs committee is trying to evaluate. Therefore, what better way to communicate the very essence of you than by writing an original and truly impressive college essay. GUIDELINES Take TIME ⦠time to explore ideas, think about your many choices, and time to write and re-write. You can complete your application form in an hour or two. Writing your major essay and several auxiliary ones takes many hours. For the first time in years, the smell of garlic filled the air and the rattling of the silver bowl resonated throughout the house. The world I come from consists of underwear, nuclear bombs, and punk rockers. My world is inherently complex, mysterious, and anti-nihilist. I am David Phan, somebody who spends his weekends debating in a three piece suit, other days immersed within the punk rock culture, and some days writing opinionated blogs about underwear. Cancer, as powerful and invincible as it may seem, is a mere fraction of a personâs life. Before I could resolve my guilt, I had to broaden my perspective of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow humans. I became desperately devoted to my education because I saw knowledge as the key to freeing myself from the chains of ignorance. While learning about cancer in school I promised myself that I would memorize every fact and absorb every detail in textbooks and online medical journals. Itâs easy to forget when oneâs mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk once in a while, to remember that thereâs so much more to life than a disease. While I physically treat their cancer, I want to lend patients emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmotherâs memory. And as I began to consider my future, I realized that what I learned in school would allow me to silence that which had silenced my grandmother. Find The Perfect Topic + Write With Style With Julie, College Essay Coach
Find The Perfect Topic + Write With Style With Julie, College Essay Coach The worst time came when my parents tried to fix their relationship. Enduring the stress of her restaurant, my father, and her mistakes, my mom attempted to end her life. â My adjective-a-day keeps people listening, gives me conversation starters with faculty, and solicits fun suggestions from my friends. 25 therapy sessions, over 40 poems, not a single one didnât mention my mom. I shared my writing at open mics, with friends, and I cried every time. I embraced the pain, the hurt, and eventually, it became the norm. I took on the state of what I like to call collaborative independence, and to my delight, I was elected to StuGo after my third year of trying. The heavy scuba gear jerks me under the icy water, and exhilaration washes over me. The process of achieving this new mindset came through the cultivation of relationships. I became fascinated by the new perspectives each person in my life could offer if I really took the time to connect. Not only did I improve my listening skills, but I began to consider the big-picture consequences my engagements could have. People interpret situations differently due to their own cultural contexts, so I had to learn to pay more attention to detail to understand every point of view. However, there are moments where the seconds stand still. The iTaylorâs best feature is its built-in optimism. Lost in the meditative rolling effect of the tide and the hum of the vast ocean, I feel present. I dive deeper to inspect a vibrant community of creatures, and we float together, carefree and synchronized. My fascination with marine life led me to volunteer as an exhibit interpreter for the Aquarium of the Pacific, where I share my love for the ocean. That night, the glow-in-the-dark ball skittered across the ice. My opponent and I, brooms in hand, charged forward. We collided and I banana-peeled, my head taking the brunt of the impact. Stubborn as I was, even with a concussion, I wanted to remain in class and do everything my peers did, but my healing brain protested. Most of my time is spent rescuing animals from small children and, in turn, keeping small children from drowning in the tanks. Iâll never forget the time when a visiting family and I were so involved in discussing ocean conservation that, before I knew it, an hour had passed. Finding this mutual connection over the love of marine life and the desire to conserve the ocean environment keeps me returning each summer. I hold onto my time as dearly as my Scottish granny holds onto her money. Iâm careful about how I spend it and fearful of wasting it. Occasionally, Zora, my English teacherâs dog, would tag along and weâd walk for miles in each other's silent company. Other times, I found myself pruning the orchard, feeding the schoolâs wood furnaces, or my new favorite activity, splitting wood. My teachers didnât quite know what to do with me, so, no longer confined to a classroom if I didnât want to be, I was in limbo. I began wandering around campus with no company except my thoughts. Thanks to my positivity, I was chosen to give the morning announcements freshman year. Now, I am the alarm clock for the 1,428 students of Fox Lane High School. For the past three years, I have been starting everyoneâs morning with a bubbly, âGood morning, foxes! â and ending with âHave a marvelous Monday,â âTerrific Tuesdayâ or âPhenomenal Friday!
